Legacy Netgear ReadyNAS models do not officially support the new ReadyNAS OS 6. Luckily is pretty straightforward to upgrade most of X86 based legacy ReadyNAS devices from RAIDiator 4.2 to ReadyNAS OS 6 unofficially. Needless to say, this is completely unsupported by Netgear and proceed at your own risk.
Synology makes it super easy to install Plex Media Server on its DiskStation NAS boxes, but missing from the simple user interface is a way to update Plex Media Server if a new version releases. Don’t worry, though—there’s still a way to do it. Plex stopped supporting RAIDiator-x86 a long time ago now. You can put OS6 on your NAS but doing so is unsupported by NETGEAR and requires a factory default (wipes all data, settings, everything) so your data first. So I've got the Plex Media Server app running on my Readynas 102, and I'm having trouble setting it up. Whenever I go to add a library through the web app from the ReadyNas, it simply says 'your changes cannot be saved'. I've tried using 2 different browsers, and with all firewalls turned off.
There are bunch of threads about this on Netgear Forums, but basic instructions can be found here.
- Backup all data! Existing ReadyNAS volume will be wiped during the upgrade process.
- Download http://www.readynas.com/contributed/mdgm/r4tor6/PREP4TOR6_0.1-x86.bin plugin and install it using web GUI firmware upgrade page. Do not reboot the NAS.
- Download 6.6.0 firmware from https://www.readynas.com/contributed/mdgm/r4tor6/R4toR6_6.6.0.bin and install it using the same firmware upgrade page. Reboot the NAS when prompted.
- Upgrade should take around 5-10 minutes. Default admin login is admin/password

“FreeNAS is the go to solution for managing storage. Viewers of my podcast often ask me about building servers for work, home and the cloud, when storage is involved my answer is always “Just use FreeNAS”. FreeNAS leaves you feeling secure in the knowledge that anyone can operate its web interface, but you can still benefit from the power of the command line.”

“I heard about FreeNAS at a conference and realized it was an immediate necessity for one of my clients. They had an existing NAS system that was not being used to its potential. After I rebuilt their back-up system using FreeNAS, their workflow improved by probably 5 times what they were able to do do previously.”

“Creating NFS/CIFS mounts – done. Uploading my music, pictures, videos, and documents – done. Sharing my uploads with my PS3, smart TV, and tablet – done. I have barely scratched the surface of what FreeNAS can do because it has been doing everything I want it to do.”

“I’m a big, big fan of the platform. My little FreeNAS box has been running without fail for almost a year now and it gets a LOT of use in my home. It’s practically earned family-member status.”
